Week 3: Robotics+ Art

After last week's lecture, I assumed that mathematics had a very positive impact on art as well as vice versa.  These same mathematics also helped produce the technologies we see and use today, so I also believed that it would further improve artwork.  However, after listening to Dr. Vesna's lectures, I had a slight change in my perspective.  Despite all of the resources technology provides to modern day artists, it also takes away the creativity and imagination in their pieces; however, there are still many positives that technology brings out of art and vice versa.  Without the help of technology, art would not be as wide spread as it is today

One of the major positives that technology has brought to the artistic world is speed and efficiency.  Dr. Vesna discussed how Ford was able to utilize technology to mass produce vehicles.  Before this, it was unimaginable to be able to produce thousands of cars a year, let alone hundreds; however, thanks to the use of newfound technologies, Ford was able to factory produce thousands of identical cars in a short period of time.  This was a major turning point for the century, by utilizing the assembly line, Henry Ford completely changes the not only the automobile industry, but also various industries across the world.

Despite this, there is also a major drawback to being able to mass produce.  As I said above, this ability takes away the creativity and imagination from pieces of art.  Nowadays, you can find paintings created by legendary artists such as Picasso and De Vinci in convenience stores.   Thanks to technology like the printer, their are millions of copies of original works of art.  The technology doesn't take away from the beauty of the painting, but rather its uniqueness.  Personally, I don't have an issue with copies being made; however, I can understand artists having a problem with their pieces, that they spent countless hours working on, being sold for chump change because recreations can easily be made and sold at unreasonably low prices.

In the end, technologies positive effects on artwork outweigh the negatives that I feel erect only a small amount of people.  Thanks to the rapid development of technology in today't time, we are able to watch CGI (computer generated images) in movies that can turn fantasies into reality.  For example, in the movie "San Andreas", we see the almost to real destruction of San Francisco that really makes you feel as if the city was being destroyed when in actuality it is all just computer generated, and the actual city is perfectly intact.  This amazing feet was only reached thanks to the help of both artists and technology being used in sync.  Amazing things can happen when we utilize technology and art.  For me, you cannot have one without the other.

  1. I found your relation to CGI to be quite interesting. Once you start to notice the influence of technology on today's art, you begin to realize the mass effect it has on every aspect of art. Excellent post!

  2. Hello Cameron ,
I thought your post was very insightful and easy to follow your claims about technology definitely lined up with my ideas but we used completely different examples. I agree that technology has helped humans in both positive and negative ways. For example when you talked about Henry Ford inventing the assembly line, which made it possible to make a car affordable. This innovation was definitely a great deal for people since they could afford a vehicle now but It took away the connection of authenticity from making a vehicle. I find this interesting because many car manufactures that still make cars by hand they are very expensive because of the time it takes in order to finish building one in comparison to a car built on the assembly line. As we continue to make advancements in technology, we as humans are losing our own self of authentically through technology. So in reality is technology helping us or negatively affecting us?

  3. Hi Cameron,

I respectfully disagree with your claim that the mass production takes away creativity and imagination from art. I believe that the mass production and copying of great works of art serves to increase the circulation and thus the appreciation of the artwork. This in turn can serve to inspire current and aspiring artists. Most people will say that it "cheapens" the artwork yet when people visit pieces like the Mona Lisa or The Creation of Adam, they will always be in awe.

Otherwise, the rest of your blog post is very good and insightful!
